SuperTrip

I took this photo through our second story window and you can see Trip on top of our storage box. Immediately before this, he was standing on it, with his front leg n the deck railing, apparently trying to get as high as he could, and looking upward. He must have heard me moving around upstairs; he is our only dog who knows to look up and seems to understand when he hears us speak from a different location. Bless their hearts, but our other dogs just run around the yard looking for us. This same storage box used to be under the window to the laundry room, which houses the dogs' food and leashes; and sometimes when I was preparing food or getting leashes, I would look up to see Trip staring at me through the window- using the box as a stool. This dog has some major hyperawareness going on...I swear he also can "hear" when I am upstairs donning dog walking clothes and shoes, versus getting dressed to go to work or somewhere else, because when I come downstairs, there is Trippy all bouncy and ready to walk!

The first night we brought Tanner, then a basically feral foster dog, home, Tanner was extremely afraid and uncomfortable in our house. He just laid in a corner of the kitchen, ready to flee at any moment. But, sweet, intuitive Trip seemed to understand Tanner's fear and just calmly laid about 3 feet from him, facing him, as if to say "Its okay, buddy", and gave Tanner the space he needed. It was really cool to see Trip realize that his usual playful roughhousing wasn't appropriate at this time, and being calm and quiet was the way to go.

You've heard that one sense will become more acute if another is lost? Well, I'm not sure if that is true, but our dog with the missing leg sure seems to have an extra dose of heart..love you, SuperTrip!

The chicken definitely didn't come first...

At least not at our house. Turns out, before the actual, living and breathing chickens set claws in our yard, there are many VERY necessary accessories to acquire first, in order to be a successful chickener. Such as:

Chicken themed home decor (dish towels courtesy of my mama and her trip to Gatlinburg)!

Shoes. I've also already purchased (on eBay) my chicken boots, to wear while cleaning their coop and stomping around the yard and garden. This definitely was NOT an excuse for me to buy a pair of shoes, I swear.

Well, gotta run- time to go shop for matching chicken sweaters for Jon and me!

Grateful

Some days it is so good to have a house full of paws to come home to- and on Mondays, my husband is usually also there to greet me!

My work is always filled with serious consequences for my clients, which means something different to each person. Jail time, losing their driver's license, paying a lot of money to the court or a victim, sometimes just the time that court consumes- are all different consequences that I have to discuss daily with the folks I work with. But, sometimes the stakes and implications are much more grave...registering as a sex offender, being deported to a country that had never really been home, or many years in prison. Days filled with talks of these things make a girl very happy to walk in the door to wagging tails.

This weekend, we had a houseguest, Dutchess: the sweet, HUGE, regal Rhodesian Ridgeback.

My boys adored their temporary sister! Here are Dutch and Trip relaxing.

I also went on a hike with my new buddy, Prince. Prince is available for adoption through Brother Wolf Animal Rescue. He is about 2 years old and too freaking cute for words. To learn more about him, click here!

And, a picture of Marvin, just for good measure!

Paying it Forward

I am fortunate enough to have some very generous souls in my life...some of the most amazing acts of generosity and love that I have seen are through the animal rescue work I've been around. Watching person after person open their homes, their hearts, and their wallets to help a homeless pet in need is truly a beautiful thing.

Just this weekend....
Over 70 pets were adopted at the huge adoption event yesterday!

Even my own Trip opened up his crate to his "brother".

My sweet friend Kelly gave me my first chicken! I've named her Tiny.

But, my husband takes the generosity gold medal...after he won 2nd and 4th place in his bike races this weekend (woo hoo!) he went out for some well earned junk food. While in line at the grocery store, he chatted with an elderly man behind him. Jon was struck by what he imagined this man's life to be and when it was Jon's turn to check out, he left cash to cover the man's groceries. Before he left, we were discussing if we should go out for a birthday dinner, but I wasn't hungry, so, Jon did this in the spirit of my birthday, instead! Who needs cake or ice cream when you have a brown eyed handsome man?
